About the 2026 Honda CR-V

The CR-V is Honda's compact five-seat SUV, and the gas version covered on this page runs a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 190 horsepower through a continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on all three gas trims. EPA ratings come in at 28 city / 33 highway / 30 combined with front-wheel drive and 27 / 31 / 29 with AWD, on regular unleaded from a 14.0-gallon tank.

The main change for 2026 is that Honda made the bigger screen standard. Every CR-V now arrives with a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charging pad, while the EX-L steps up to a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Honda also added a rugged TrailSport model to the range for 2026, but it is hybrid-only, so it sits outside the gas lineup.

Practicality is why most shoppers end up here. The gas CR-V carries roughly 39.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 76.5 cubic feet with them folded — noticeably more than the hybrid, which surrenders some floor space to its battery pack at 36.3 and 71.8 cubic feet.

It suits commuters and small families across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who want a predictable, roomy crossover rather than a fast or flashy one, and who would rather put money into equipment than into a bigger engine.

Honda also sells the CR-V with a 2.0-liter two-motor hybrid making 204 horsepower and rated as high as 43 / 36 / 40 mpg. That car has its own page — the short version is that it trades a little cargo room and a higher price for a large fuel-economy gain.

What the reviewers say

Cars.com put the CR-V through its 2026 Compact SUV Challenge against seven rivals and it finished second overall with 687 points, behind the Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo on 704 and ahead of the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Kia Sportage Hybrid. The judges tested a Sport Touring Hybrid, so the result speaks to the CR-V's cabin and chassis rather than the 1.5T specifically. They praised its plush ride, the quality of the interior materials, and a back seat with backrests that recline generously, while flagging the 9-inch touchscreen as small for the class and the hybrid powertrain as coarse under hard acceleration.

Consumer Reports credits the current CR-V with better ride comfort, easier-to-use controls and a modest gain in cargo space compared with the version it replaced, but notes that acceleration and fuel economy slipped as the SUV grew larger and heavier; in its own testing the gas CR-V returned 26 mpg overall.

Autoweb's road test called it one of the best-driving small SUVs and highlighted the responsive steering and secure handling, while criticizing the plain exterior and the absence of premium touches such as ventilated seats or a panoramic roof.

Specifications describe the configuration we most commonly lease and can vary by trim.

Which CR-V trim should you lease?

We lease the gas CR-V in three trims — LX, EX and EX-L — and every one of them can be had with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The four remaining trims in the 2026 range (Sport, TrailSport, Sport-L and Sport Touring) are hybrid-only.

  • LX — 17-inch steel wheels with covers, cloth seats with a manual height-adjustable driver's seat, single-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, a four-speaker 160-watt stereo, and the now-standard 9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring and a 15-watt wireless charger.
  • EX — the value pick for most drivers. It adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10-way power driver's seat with two-way lumbar, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, remote engine start, extra USB-C ports, a six-speaker 240-watt system, and — importantly — the Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Monitor, which the LX does not get.
  • EX-L — the loaded gas car. Leather-trimmed seating, two-position driver's memory, a four-way power front passenger seat, a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, an eight-speaker 320-watt audio system with HD Radio, front and rear parking sensors, a power tailgate with programmable height, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

If your budget only stretches so far, the jump from LX to EX buys the most usable equipment per dollar; EX-L is about comfort and convenience rather than capability.

Safety

Honda Sensing is standard on every 2026 CR-V, including collision mitigation braking with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane keeping and road departure mitigation, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert is not on the LX — it starts at EX.

NHTSA gave the 2026 CR-V AWD a 5-star overall rating, built from 4 stars in frontal crash, 5 stars in side crash and 4 stars for rollover resistance.

IIHS results for 2026 are mixed, and worth knowing before you sign. The CR-V rates Good in the driver- and passenger-side small overlap front tests, Good in the updated side test, Good for headlights and Good for seat belt reminders, with Acceptable front crash prevention for both vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian scenarios. However, it rates Poor in the updated moderate overlap front test — the seat bracket deformed and the belt shifted on the rear dummy — and as a result the 2026 CR-V is not a Top Safety Pick, while the Tucson, Sportage, CX-50 and Forester are. We would rather you heard that from us than found it after signing.

How the CR-V compares

Toyota RAV4 — for 2026 Toyota offers the RAV4 only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, so there is no longer a conventional gas RAV4 to compare against a CR-V LX or EX. If you specifically want a lower-cost, non-hybrid compact SUV payment, the gas CR-V is one of the few remaining ways to get it.

Hyundai Tucson — its 2.5-liter gas model rates 25/33/28 mpg front-drive and 24/30/26 AWD, so the CR-V's 30 and 29 combined are the stronger numbers. The Tucson Hybrid is a Top Safety Pick winner for 2026, which the CR-V is not.

Kia Sportage — mechanically close to the Tucson, with the same 28 combined mpg front-drive gas rating and a 42 mpg front-drive hybrid. Both Korean SUVs finished behind the CR-V in Cars.com's 2026 Compact SUV Challenge.

Mazda CX-5 — the 2026 AWD 2.5-liter is EPA-rated 24/30/26, a few mpg behind an AWD CR-V, and Mazda's pitch is driving feel and interior finish rather than outright space.

Honda CR-V lease questions

Should I lease the gas CR-V or the CR-V Hybrid?

It comes down to how much you drive. The gas CR-V is rated 30 mpg combined front-drive; the hybrid reaches 40. The hybrid also costs more per month and gives up cargo room — 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats versus 39.3 for the gas car. High-mileage commuters usually come out ahead on the hybrid; low-mileage drivers often do not.

Which gas trim is the smartest lease?

For most of our clients, the EX. Compared with the LX it adds heated front seats, a power driver's seat, dual-zone climate, a power moonroof, remote start and blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert — features you use every day in Northeast traffic and weather. EX-L is worth it if you want leather, the power tailgate and parking sensors.

Do I need all-wheel drive in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut?

AWD is available on the LX, EX and EX-L, and it is the more popular configuration here. The cost is small: EPA ratings drop from 28/33/30 with front-wheel drive to 27/31/29 with AWD. If you park outdoors, deal with unplowed side streets or drive north in winter, the AWD is usually worth the modest monthly difference.

How many miles should I put on a CR-V lease?

Pick a mileage allowance that matches how you actually drive, not the cheapest number on the sheet. Overage is billed per mile at lease end and is almost always more expensive than buying the miles up front. Tell us your real annual mileage — including summer trips and any commuting — and we will quote 7,500, 10,000, 12,000 or 15,000 per year side by side.

What changed on the 2026 CR-V?

Honda made the larger screen standard across the range: every 2026 CR-V now has a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. The EX-L also gains a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. Honda added a rugged TrailSport model too, but it is hybrid-only, so it is not part of the gas LX/EX/EX-L lineup.

How safe is the 2026 CR-V?

NHTSA rates the 2026 CR-V AWD 5 stars overall. IIHS results are mixed: Good in the small overlap and updated side tests and for headlights, but Poor in the updated moderate overlap front test, so the CR-V is not a 2026 Top Safety Pick. Honda Sensing is standard on every trim; blind spot monitoring starts at the EX.

What happens when my CR-V lease ends?

You have three routes. Return the vehicle and walk away after the inspection, buy it at the residual value written into your contract, or use any equity toward your next lease. We track your maturity date and start shopping options with you roughly 90 days out, so you are not deciding under pressure in the last week.
