Leasing a Volvo

Volvo occupies the understated end of the luxury market: Scandinavian interiors, calm road manners, and safety treated as the organizing idea rather than a spec-sheet footnote. Car and Driver rates the 2026 XC60 nine out of ten and ranks it fifth among compact luxury SUVs.

The safety record largely holds up, though not uniformly. For 2026 the IIHS lists the EX90 as a TOP SAFETY PICK+, with the XC90 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid one rung lower at TOP SAFETY PICK — a step back from 2025, when all three wore the plus. The 2026 bar is higher, requiring good ratings across the small overlap, moderate overlap and side tests plus good pedestrian front crash prevention.

The names decode cleanly. EX and EC mean fully electric; Volvo renamed the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge to EX40 and EC40 in 2024 to line them up with the EX30 and EX90, and dropped Recharge from its plug-in hybrids, which now carry T6 or T8 badges. The EX60 arrives as a 2027 model. XC60 and XC90 remain the gas and Plug-In Hybrid SUVs. Among wagons, only the V60 Cross Country is still sold new — Volvo states the V90 Cross Country is no longer available as a new vehicle in the US.

Coverage is four years or 50,000 miles basic and powertrain, plus 12-year unlimited-mileage corrosion protection. Volvo includes factory scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles on 2026–27 cars, trimmed from three years or 30,000 miles previously.

Reliability is the soft spot. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 21st overall and 15th for new-car reliability; J.D. Power's 2026 Dependability Study averaged 204 problems per 100 vehicles, with The Drive reporting Volvo at 296. Resale is mixed: iSeeCars has the V60 Cross Country holding roughly 56 percent over five years, the XC60 around 50.

Volvo's new-vehicle coverage runs four years or 50,000 miles for both the basic and powertrain warranties, with 12-year unlimited-mileage corrosion protection, per Kelley Blue Book's 2026 EX30 listing. Volvo Car USA also includes complimentary factory scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles on 2026 and 2027 models. Worth knowing: earlier cars received three years or 30,000 miles, so that benefit was reduced.

Do Volvos still earn top IIHS safety awards?

Some do. On the IIHS 2026 list the EX90 is a TOP SAFETY PICK+, while the XC90 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid take the standard TOP SAFETY PICK. In 2025 all three carried the higher plus award, so this is a genuine step down against stricter 2026 criteria. Other Volvo models do not currently appear among the 2026 winners.

What do EX30, EX40, EX60 and EX90 mean versus XC60 and XC90?

EX and EC mark a fully electric Volvo. In 2024 Volvo renamed the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge to EX40 and EC40 so they matched the EX30 and EX90, and dropped the Recharge badge from plug-in hybrids, which now use T6 or T8 suffixes. XC60 and XC90 are the gas and Plug-In Hybrid SUVs. The EX60 joins as a 2027 model.

Most industry problems were infotainment and software related, and a lease typically keeps you inside the four-year factory warranty.

Can I still lease a Volvo wagon?

The V60 Cross Country, yes — Volvo Car USA lists a 2026 V60 Cross Country mild hybrid you can build and shop. The V90 Cross Country is not available: Volvo's own model page states it is no longer offered as a new vehicle in the US, and directs shoppers to the V60 Cross Country or a Certified by Volvo pre-owned car instead.
